In a swing check valve the disc hangs from a hinge pin above the seat. Forward flow pushes the disc up and out of the flow path; when flow stops or reverses, gravity and back-pressure swing it back onto the seat. Because the disc lifts clear of the bore, a full-bore swing check offers low resistance to flow, which is why the design is common on long pipelines and pump discharge lines. This differs from a lift check, where the disc moves vertically within a guide and the flow path is more restricted.
When sizing a swing check, consider both the pressure class and the flow velocity. The valve should see enough flow to keep the disc fully open, and the installation orientation must allow the disc to close under gravity. On systems prone to rapid flow reversal, discuss closure behaviour and surge risk before ordering.
